MEET THE TEAM

We are very proud of our team here at OSP, we have always been strong believers in the hands-on approach to support and you will often find one of our team searching a warehouse for that all-important volumetric. Retail is detail after all!

Over the years we have supported a vast array of businesses from suppliers to B2B retailers all in the constant desire of utilising the latest technology to maximise the performance of their space. I think we have now proved you don’t have to be a ‘standard retailer’ to take advantage of retail technology. This could and would not have happened without the guidance from the team here at OSP.

We are always very proud of customer reviews and we believe these to be a testament of our ways of working and endless desire to drive our client’s business forward.

Tristan Kemp

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Tristan started his career in retail from an early age working in a Yacht Chandlery on the shop floor selling to customers. At the time, he was studying IT and could clearly see the link between computer systems and very simple stock keeping. The store he was working in had a very simple EPOS system and stock keeping was held on an A4 sheet of paper, with stock order being based on a ‘gut feel’. After 20 years of working in the industry the store manager’s ‘gut feel’ approach was fairly accurate, however, there was always an excess of stock that was impossible to store and ended up in the roof of the building hung up by pieces of string; in modern day terms, it was bad Micro Space Management.

After finishing his Degree, he joined a large blue-chip DIY retailer within their Visual Merchandising team at the very start of their Space Planning evolution. They had just bought a space planning piece of software and we’re looking to do great things with it. Immediately he understood the potential power of this software in a retail environment: to very simply act as a tool to optimise the stock and space in the store.

After a very enjoyable period at this retailer with a vast experience in how big budgets allow you to utilise tools many smaller retailers only dream about, he decided it was time to set up his own company to try and develop some of these skills within businesses that may either not know about or not fully understand how to get the most out of their current software. After 3 years of working across multiple retailers on a consultancy basis he decided it was time to grow and to offer not just support on a consultancy basis, but also a complete planogramming service utilising his own software and so OSP Retail was born.

One of his key objectives at OSP Retail is to try and support businesses of all sizes and take away the black art of planogramming, making it more accessible and achievable and ultimately making businesses function more effectively.

Sam Hodgson

HEAD OF SPACE PLANNING

Sam has 19 years of experience in retail planning and implementation which has culminated in him becoming our Head of Space Planning. He began his career working as a merchandiser for a nationwide retail solutions company, moving swiftly on to regional management and then on to project management. Sam later moved across into the busy Head Office commercial environment to offer project support to a leading DIY retailer, he was then asked to join their team on a permanent basis. Initially working as a visual merchandiser, he moved on to become one of eight people chosen to create and develop a new planogramming team that would service the entire business. His extensive Micro Space Planning and commercial experience in this role meant he was instrumental in delivering fundamental Visual Merchandising & Planogramming step changes, realising Micro Space objectives in existing stores, new formats and in experimental pilot stores.

Sam’s knowledge and expertise in Micro Space Planning systems within large multi-national retailers, coupled with his acute understanding of commerciality, means he is able to advise on how best to maximise the benefits of Micro-Space systems, whilst incorporating an appreciation of wider business objectives.

A creative and fun-loving family man, Sam has solid ‘people-skills’ credentials behind him, managing, motivating and leading teams to deliver projects. This experience has been instrumental in both ensuring and maximising the benefits and capabilities of the programmes he has worked on for our clients. The results have, without exception, delivered increased return, profit, and sales per sq foot. In addition to this, his Visual Merchandising experience and a natural eye for creating displays that are appealing and have an impact, ensure that merchandising appeals both to customer impulses and to the commerciality of a business.

He is hands-on with a can-do attitude and is always ready to have a go and find creative solutions.

Mark went to Agricultural College, where he completed an HND in Commercial Horticulture.

From there, he joined Sainsbury`s Homebase, where he became the Company Gardening Merchandiser for 17 years. He then moved onto become the account manager of a Garden Supplier and a merchandising manager with another well-known Supplier.

Mark then joined Wyevale as a Planning Manager/Space Designer where he worked for 11 years. Overall, he has worked in Retail for over 35 years and has excellent listening and communication skills. Although he has a Horticultural qualification, he regards himself as a retailer, who is commercial and customer focused.

Mark is comfortable capturing existing shop floor plans, so that sales versus space can be measured, but enjoys the challenge of improving the customer journey and the profitability of the shop by allocating the correct amount of space to each category.
